What was your best day at Taber Company?

When my old company moved to Alabama, a mutual acquaintance arranged for me to get a tour of the business with Brian (Taber). I needed practice interviewing etc. as I was a 20+ years employee at the fireplace company. As a favor to a friend, Brian took the time to walk someone he had never met, through his business, and that was impressive. I showed up in a suit, Brian offered me a coffee and a smile and said; “you didn’t have to get all dressed up.”When I left, I called my wife and our mutual friend and said “man, what a guy!”

What accomplishment (at Taber Company) are you most proud of?

Using several Lean tools in the cabinet shop, we have been able to produce the same quantity of cabinets per day with half the labor headcount.

What project has had the biggest impact on you and why?

So many I hate to leave any projects out! There have been several projects that have impressed me the most and have shown our wide range capabilities. Edwards Life Sciences (amazing), Four Seasons Napa, Schools First, several We Works and our work at Hotel Del Coronado are some of my favorites.

Any hobbies you would like to mention? I have enjoyed, watching my kids play a variety of sports over the years. I’m a sports fanatic, and any Wisconsin related team is “must see” for me: Packers, Badgers, Brewers and Bucks!

Would you recommend this as a place to work? If so, why? Yes, we have a couple of outstanding workers from my old place, wish we had more.

Who inspires you?

Paul Akers – founder and President of FastCap (a product development company focused on woodworkers). To grow his business, he uses the concepts of Lean Manufacturing and the Toyota Production System. He has become an international leader for companies looking to build their cultures with a “people are first” philosophy. The things he has learned and done are shared and passed forward in videos and one of the best business books I’ve read: 2 Second Lean.
